Welcome to my video game resources page! When building your video game business, I can’t recommend these websites and tools enough.
I have personally used every recommendation on this page. Many of the video game resources listed here are currently being used. They are extremely important to running my indie gamedev business. Some may not currently be in use, but were while building the business and getting it to where it is today.
I do need to disclose something:
Some of the links below are affiliate links. This means that if you choose to make a purchase, I will earn a small commission at no additional cost to you. I recommend these tools and services because they are helpful and useful, not because of the small commissions I make if you decide to buy something. I would never recommend something I don’t or haven’t personally used and enjoyed.
Website Hosting Resources
If you’re building games, you need to have a website. Not just to show off your games, but for marketing them, too. So, I recommend A2 for hosting and their easy 1 click WordPress install.
Email Marketing Resources
ConvertKit is, hands down, the best service for email marketing. Of course, I’ve used a lot of different ones. After all the free and paid services I’ve tried, this one has the most features for the lowest price. ConvertKit also has a better user experience than most services (in and outside of email).
Learning to Code
If you like to learn through videos and interaction: This website called Team Treehouse is the best IMHO. They’ve got great videos and a tool that allows you to code in the browser while you follow along with the video. They’ve got everything from building websites to building mobile apps and even games. Click here to get a 50% discount on your first month at Team Treehouse.
If you like to learn through text and interaction: I’m currently going through one of Codecademy’s intensive programs, which are $200, but there is a lot of free content to check out.
Safety, Security, and Privacy Resources
BACKUP YOUR GAMES. I had to put that all in caps to make sure you understand that you need to be backing up everything you create. Imagine putting days, weeks, and months of work into a game only to have your hard drive fail. I used to keep an on-site physical hard drive backup but even that failed on me. That’s why I signed up for Backblaze. It’s super cheap and backs up your entire computer so it’s pretty much a no-brainer.
Lodging: I pretty much exclusively use AirBnB for finding a place to stay. It always ends up being the more affordable route, wherever I go. There was a promotion for a free $40 credit if you signed up through that link, but it may have ended by now.
Email Lists That Will Help You Succeed
The Hustle – This is my absolute favorite email list to be on. They send great entrepreneurial articles right to your email. If you have any interest in running a video game business, keeping up to date through The Hustle is a great way to do it.
